Rose Hill Civic Association Elects New Officers
NOTE: There will be no RHCA meeting on Tuesday, June 23rd. The next meeting is set for Tuesday, Aug. 25, 7 p.m. in the community room at John Marshall Library. Have a Safe and Happy 4th of July!
For the first time in more than 25 years, the Rose Hill Civic Association is headed by a new president and will operate going forward with an expanded board of directors.
Wes Hanney, a 39-year-old software engineer, was elected president at a meeting of the RHCA on May 26. He takes over for Carl Sell Jr. Sell, who had presided over the association since the beginning of the 21st century. Sell is a former sportswriter for the Washington Evening Star and has served on the Fairfax County Planning Commission and Fairfax County Park Authority board. He will turn 90 years old on July 11, 2026.
Also elected to the RHCA board of directors was Katya Derzon as vice president, Lori Scheibe as secretary, Ken Marr as treasurer, Daniel Bearth as editor of the Rose Hill Rambler and Brian Donohue as webmaster.
Wes, who moved to Virginia in 2021 and bought a house on Willowood Lane in the Winter of 2022, said he wants to "modernize the outreach of the association, improve the feedback loop and make the democratic aspects of decision making more accessible to members."
Katya, 32, grew up in Northern Virginia and bought a house on Leewood Drive in March 2023. She is a paralegal by trade but also a "chaos gardener, safety enthusiast and crafter at heart." She also supports efforts to make the organization more accessible and attractive to the community and will focus particular attention on safety, public transit, and other public services beautification and conservation.
Lori, 63, retired in 2025 from Northrup Grumman where she worked as a systems engineer and program manager. A lifelong Virginia resident who lived in the Rose Hill Apartments before moving to a house on Treetop Lane in 1996, Scheibe volunteers as a Virginia Master Naturalist, enjoys reading and travel, and wants to support ongoing efforts of the association to monitor and review proposed developments in the neighborhood.
Ken, 49, works as a physicist and has lived on Rose Hill Drive since 2015. He was first elected treasurer in 2024. He says that wants to see more community engagement and social activities for residents.
Daniel, 73, is a retired business reporter and caregiver for his wife Ingrid and stepdaughter Michelle. He has lived on Rose Hill Drive since 1993 and has been editor of the Rambler since 2019.
Brian, 38, is a cybersecurity communications specialist, former competitive swimmer and father of two kids attending Rose Hill Elementary. He wants to update the association's online presence and improve communication with members and residents.
The Rose Hill Civic Association was formed in 1956 to represent homeowners in the newly built Rose Hill Farm subdivision. The organization is led entirely by volunteers and supported by donations from individuals and businesses in Rose Hill and adjacent Sunny Ridge Estates and Guilford subdivisions in Fairfax County.
